Modern Combatives
This program is based in modern combat systems such as Russian Systema, Israeli Krav Maga, U.S. and Canadian Military Combatives and Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics. These programs have been adapted and modified for civilian use in real world scenarios and situations.
Our Modern Combatives System provides students with the attitudes, knowledge and skills to be able to protect themselves and others in violent encounters in the modern world. The focus in this program is on realistic, practical, functional personal protection and self defense.
Along with the physical skills that need to be developed the mental attitude and psychological conditioning are addressed. This is necessary to ensure participants understand their own natural responses to violence and how to respond in an effective manner when faced with such instances. Combat psychology is a large component of the program as the mental attitudes and abilities are as important as the physical skills. A combination of training the body and mind together is vital for success.

Traditional Chinese Martial Arts - Kung Fu and Wu Shu
Our system is called Black Tiger Kung Fu.
It is based in several Traditional Chinese Martial Arts and is a culmination of over 30 years of study by our Head Instructor Doug Hicks. The system is primarily based on the styles of Hung Gar, Wing Chun, Tai Chi and Ba Gua. Chin Na is also taught as it adds a component of grappling, joint locks and throws to the curriculum.
Hung Gar teaches a strong base, power generation and powerful striking. It is a style that emphasizes strong body conditioning, strength and power and is highly regarded as a traditional martial art in China.
Wing Chun is based on small movements in close fighting range and interception as a primary principle. Wing Chun is what Ip Man taught to Bruce Lee and where many of the concepts of Jeet Kune Do arrive from. It is a great style for fighting in confined spaces.
Tai Chi is a Chinese Internal Martial Art with a history that spans back to the origins of the Wu Dang Mountain martial traditions and the fighting Monks of old times. It is often used as a health exercise to strengthen the body from the inside out and provide exercise for those with less robust health. That is only a very small part of Tai Chi. It is in fact a devastating and powerful fighting system. It's primary principles of internal power generation, a strong base and connection with the entire body moving as a single unit provide the practitioner with tremendous power and abilities to neutralize attacks and subdue opponents.
Ba Gua is another Chinese Internal Martial Art. It's history spans back several generations and is considered one of the more advanced fighting systems of China. It is based on constant, circular movements that are unique from other martial arts. The masters of old were said to be untouchable and could move around and subdue their opponents with lightning speed and agility.
Kung Fu classes combine the ancient arts described above with an authentic flavor. They are however presented in a way that people in our contemporary western world can understand and appreciate.
